Circle of Concern Versus Circle of Control
I’ve recently read an amazing book by Michael Singer called – the Surrender Experiment.
As a result, I’ve been thinking a lot about where I direct my focus/attention and energy, and in exploring surrender and embracing more joy in life, I concluded that it really requires me to let go of control. Wow, that was a big one for me!!
In our daily lives, it’s easy to get caught up in worries and anxieties about things beyond our control. We focus on trying to ‘make things happen’, as opposed to aligning ourselves more with the flow of life. Trusting that things are always happening for us, not to us!
It reminded me of Stephen Covey’s concept of the “Circle of Control” and the “Circle of Concern” which provides a powerful framework to help us refocus our energy.
The Circle of Concern includes all the things we care about—global events, other people’s opinions, the economy—but over which we have little to no control.
The Circle of Control, on the other hand, includes the things we can directly influence, such as our attitudes, choices, and actions.
When we spend too much time and energy on things within the Circle of Concern, we become drained, anxious, and stressed, robbing us of the mental and emotional space needed to embrace joy. This misplaced focus can lead to feelings of helplessness, as we’re constantly trying to solve problems that are beyond our ability to change.
By consciously redirecting our attention to our Circle of Control, we empower ourselves. This shift allows us to focus on what we can actually do—like cultivating a positive mindset, nurturing relationships, or working on personal growth. When we align our energy with the things we can control, we not only reduce stress but also open ourselves up to joy, gratitude, and a greater sense of fulfilment.
Ultimately, embracing this mindset is about making a choice. We can choose to dwell on what’s beyond our reach, or we can invest our energy in areas where we can make a real difference, both in our lives and in the lives of others. By doing so, we create space for joy to flourish, even during life’s challenges.
Reflections :-
- Where in day-to-day life are you giving too much attention to things outside of your control?
- Where can you let go of control?
- What do you need to believe in order to let go of control?
- What would embracing more joy in life look/feel and sound like for you?
- How can you surrender more to the flow of life?
If you have a tool in your tool kit, such as PSYCH-K®, you might find that the answers to the questions above, provide some great insights that you can apply to your own life. Perhaps by changing your beliefs, transforming the perception of stress and/or taking practical action.
If you don’t yet have a tool in your tool kit then consider reaching out to someone for support, to help you to address whatever aspects you’d like to change.
We have a wonderful network of PSYCH-K® Facilitators who are always happy to help.
If you have any questions at all I’d be happy to help too.
Have a wonderful day!
With love
